Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am often asked "What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?"
My simplified answer is something like this:
Counselling tends to focus on specific, current situations that are causing difficulty for the client now. This work tends to be focussed on problem-solving and goal-setting, It is more likely to be short-term work.
Psychotherapy may be more focussed on understanding the origins and causes of difficulties in order to deal with them and move on. Being more process-oriented, it may support the client to connect with their feelings from situations in the past as well as the present. It is more likely to be long-term work.
My work with clients will tend to draw on both styles. Much will depend on the contract or agreement I make with the client at the start of our work together.
